Byron Howell - Pharmacist
Byron was raised in Gordo, Alabama with his parents, 2 brothers, and 1 sister. In 2005 he became the pharmacist at Magnolia Springs Pharmacy and now considers Baldwin County his home. Byron graduated from Auburn University in 1994 with a B.S. in Pharmacy. He also attended compounding courses at “Professional Compounding Centers of America” in Houston, Texas. Byron has 15 years of retail pharmacy experience, having worked for Harco drugs and an independent pharmacy in Livingston, Alabama. He enjoys the atmosphere of a small town pharmacy where everyone feels like family. “We like providing a service that you can’t find at the big chain stores.” In Byron’s time off he enjoys traveling and attending Auburn football games.
Jutta (Utah) Kaiser-Huff
Jutta is a long way from her birthplace in Heidelberg, Germany. She traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad in her youth and in 1972 came to Baldwin County making it her home. Prior to returning to Baldwin County she worked at Auburn University for 11 years, and she considers herself a true Auburn fan. Jutta is recently married to her “Exquisite” Denny Huff and has 2 grown children and 3 beautiful grandchildren that she adores. She enjoys the sanctuary of the River, her porch, and working at the Pharmacy. What she wishes for all is “The experience of ‘welcome home’…….the calling of my soul. To share with everyone whose path joins mine and be given the opportunity to create and atmosphere of healing, serenity, and JOY, blessing and belonging, that embraces people and draws them in – makes them feel special and cared for. This work gives me hope that the Presence in our hearts lives in a way which is indeed miraculous.” - PEACE
Elaine Slay
Originally from Opp Alabama Elaine and her husband Buster moved to Magnolia Springs in 2003 and made it their home. They were drawn to the town because of the quiet, laid back atmosphere and have enjoyed becoming involved in such a friendly community. She has 1 son, 1 daughter, and 4 beautiful grandchildren in Northern Alabama. She loves to spend time with them, and makes time to visit often. Elaine is thankful for a change of pace after working in the Dentistry field for 13 years and the banking business for 27 years. She loves the Magnolia Springs Pharmacy and enjoys meeting new people everyday.
Sheila Schmidt
Sheila and her husband Ron were both born and raised in Louisiana where they attended college. They have 4 children and 6 grandchildren that they enjoy every chance they have. They resided in Pensacola for 24 years and moved to Baldwin County in 2004 because of their appreciation for the beauty of the area. Sheila enjoys the friendly atmosphere of the town and of Magnolia Springs Pharmacy. She loves the uniqueness of her job and the wonderful staff and clients she comes in contact with each day. When Sheila is not working at the Pharmacy you can usually find her tending to or riding one of her “Show Horses”.
The History of Magnolia Springs
“The beautiful town of Magnolia Springs was developed from a Spanish land grant in the year 1800 and, by the end of the War Between the States, rapidly became a primary destination for the families and descendants of many of the soldiers who had fought on both sides. Families from Vermont, Chicago, St. Louis and other points north built homes, inns, and businesses along the river's edge and were joined by native Alabamans and transplants from other Southern locations.
At the turn of the century, the water from the many natural springs along both sides of the river was declared "the purest in the world" by several chemical companies in Chicago. The community's name comes from the ever-flowing springs and the abundance of aged magnolia trees that grace every residential garden. A majestic canopy of giant oak trees lines the hamlet's streets as well as a variety of exquisite camellias, and, in spring, the highways and byways of Magnolia Springs become a bower of azalea, wisteria, dogwood, and magnolia blossoms.
Central to this community is the river -- today the Magnolia River remains the only river route mail delivery in the continental United States. Quaint boathouses grace each shore, water birds swoop and dive, and the river banks are lush with wildlife and greenery. In decades past, the river was the "highway" for all commerce and communication, with steamers, sailboats and paddle wheelers connecting the river's residents with the outside world.
For over one hundred years, the Springs has maintained a Community Association, housed in the historic Association Building, adjacent to St. Paul's Episcopal Chapel, also more than 100 years of age. At the Association, community members meet once a month to share food, fun, facts, and camaraderie -- keeping everyone abreast of the news and needs of the various residents and providing yet another link in the bonds of friendship and fellowship that are truly peculiar to Magnolia Springs.
Despite the delightful and unassuming "small town" ambience of Magnolia Springs, the additional advantages of metropolitan living are only minutes away -- both Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida, lie less than an hour's drive from the quiet, tree-lined byways of the Springs. Opera, symphonies, theatre, and cultural activities are abundant, both in Mobile and Pensacola and in Baldwin County -- opportunities for cultural enrichment and diverting entertainment are everywhere.
Magnolia Springs, a successful mix of Southern and Northern, of native-born and transplant, epitomizes the "New South" yet, at the same time, glories in the true application of the phrase "Southern hospitality." The narrow lanes and shaded streets, lined with gracious homes and well-tended gardens, present an appealing presentation of life at a slightly more relaxed pace but with limitless possibilities.”
